Committee looks at updating Title IX policy in New Hanover schools

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County School Board’s Title IX Committee held their first meeting Thursday.

Title IX deals with discrimination based on sex in a public school setting and the New Hanover County School Board formed the committee to discuss current Title IX policy and what needs to be changed or updated going forward.

In recent years, the school system has faced criticism over its handling of alleged sexual misconduct.

“A lot of the time students have policies pushed upon them or placed upon them,” School Board Chair Lisa Estep said. “We always wanted to make sure that we were hearing from them and let them provide feedback. ‘Here’s the policy, what do you think?'”

The committee plans to bring law enforcement in on the conversation and create a focus group for families who feel that they have been affected.
