Community and students pack 100,000 meals for children in Haiti

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Coastal Christian High School hosted a packaging event Saturday for students and others who wanted to participate in sending meals to those less fortunate.

The school partnered with Hope Changes Everything, a Wilmington nonprofit organization that provides education, clean water, and nutritional meals to the children of Haiti.

Hundreds of volunteers filled Coastal’s gymnasium to prepare the boxes. Meals will be delivered down in Haiti in just a few weeks.

Hope Changes Everything Founder Renee Hunter is also a teacher at Coastal Christian High School. She has visited Haiti before and knows first hand the problem the children are faced with.

“I’ve seen their bloated bellies and their discolored hair due to malnutrition,” Hunter said. “I cannot tell you how much this means to me.”

She said students, families, and friends have raised $25,000 to make this day possible.

The idea came about in December. Hunter plans to send even more meals in the future and hopefully be one step closer to ending world hunger.
