Community supports Vietnam veteran

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — Thanks to Home Depot and the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary, a Vietnam Veteran’s home is getting a new look.

Raymond Ryan served in the Vietnam War where he lost part of his leg after stepping on a land mine. Ryan now lives in Brunswick County and takes care of his wife.

“My wife and I just can’t thank them enough,” said Ryan.

The project on Ryan’s home is the second Veteran project for the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary.

“If there’s a veteran that has a need, once we’re notified, we go out and assess then go from there,” said Pat Walters, the president of the auxiliary.

Dozens of Home Depot associates, who volunteer their time, have worked on the project in the past two weeks. The company has an $80 million pledge to make sure every veteran has a safe place to call home.

“When we hear about veterans like Mr. Ryan in the area who has a need for a ramp and a need to get out of their house safely, we want to help,” said Rachel Leonard with Home Depot.
