Competition growing for Wright’s seat
WILMINGTON — The competition for Wright’s seat in the state House of Representatives is growing.
Monday Wilmington native Hollis Briggs Jr. filed for the 18th District seat.
Briggs mentioned several areas of concern he has for the district that covers both New Hanover and Pender Counties. Improved public transportation and environmental concerns are on his list.
Briggs said, “Crime, of course, is at the top of the list and I would say second would be the high school dropout rate. It’s going to a phenomenal rate and everyone is running around, trying to figure out what’s going on.”
Briggs wants to change the statewide high school dropout age from 16 to 18. He is active in the local community and is a chef at Landfall Country Club.
Former Wilmington city Councilwoman Sandra Spaulding Hughes is also running for Wright’s seat.
