Congressman proposes naming post office for Maya Angelou

WASHINGTON (AP) — North Carolina Rep. Alma Adams has introduced a resolution to name a post office in Winston-Salem for poet and author Maya Angelou.

Adams, who introduced the resolution on Friday, called Angelou an iconic figure and “an overall phenomenal woman.” She said naming the post office for Angelou is a way to honor her many lifelong achievements and the mark she left on the Winston-Salem community.

Angelou, author of the acclaimed memoir “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” died last year at age 86 at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She had been a professor of American studies at Wake Forest University since 1982.
