Cop charged with child rape

A Navassa police officer is charged with first-degree rape of a child. Investigators with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office say the assault happened back in 2006.

The Sheriff’s Office says Jaymin Lenwood Murphy of Leland has worked for the Navassa Police Department for a year and a half. Investigators say he was not in law enforcement when the alleged crime happened.

Murphy is at the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office under a $100,000 secured bond. Detectives say additional charges are pending at this time.
