Council to vote on Market Street drainage improvement

WILMINGTON — Wilmington’s City Council meets tonight and there’s one item on the agenda that has the attention of local business owners along Market Street.

City Council members are expected to vote in favor of improving the drainage system along one area of Market Street.

That area lies between Old Dairy and Station Roads — a section of town that has been prone to flooding.
A City spokesperson says plans for this have been in the works for about five years.

If the council approves construction plans will start within the next few weeks but construction would be months away.

People who work along that strip of Market Street say the poor drainage has caused damage to their buildings and hurt business. This will cost the City about $1 million.

As for how this will affect traffic the DOT will have to shut down sections of Market Street for a weekend, most likely during winter months.
