Signs returned to Hugh MacRae Park after repairs from vandalism

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several signs at Hugh MacRae Park are now back up after they were vandalized and then removed last week.

According to a New Hanover County spokeswoman, the signs were taken down last week by the Parks and Gardens department.

A photo provided by the county shows “BLM” spray-painted on a park sign.

“This is not a permanent sign removal,” she wrote to WWAY.

She says parks staff took the signs down to repair them and had planned to put them back up once repairs were finished.

Nearly 15,000 people have signed a petition to change the name of Hugh MacRae Park, saying it bears the name of a man with a racist legacy.
