County to give $50,000 per year to soccer association

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The Cape Fear Soccer Association got a financial kick Monday. The County approved funding for $150,000 to go to the organization. That money will be distributed over three years.

The county funds are in addition to the City’s agreement to give the Cape Fear Soccer Association $100,000 in May.

Organizers say the money will help not only their soccer club, but the area as well.

The vote wasn’t unanimous. Some county commissioners say funding a private non-profit shouldn’t be the taxpayers’ responsibility.

The proposal passed with a three-to-two vote. The money will go to help maintain and help pay for the association’s new soccer park.
