Deputy-involved crash snarls traffic on Carolina Beach road

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A crash involving a sheriff’s deputy shut down the southbound lanes of Carolina Beach Road near Echo Farms and Codington Elementary for more than hour Friday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 2:00 p.m. Friday

According to Lt. Jerry Brewer with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, two deputies with the SAFE Unit were clocking vehicle speeds in the Codington Elementary School zone on Carolina Beach Road.

One deputy pulled over a vehicle for speeding, and called for backup. Lt. Brewer says the second deputy was coming through traffic on his motorcycle when someone slammed their brakes and the deputy ran into their vehicle.

The deputy sustained some leg injuries, but is expected to be okay. Highway Patrol is investigating.

According to New Hanover County 911 dispatch, traffic was being diverted onto George Anderson Drive.
