Crews to begin repairs on Colon Pier
DOWNTOWN WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Downtown Wilmington’s riverfront has a lot of new and exciting projects in the works. One of the projects set to begin soon is refreshing the Colon Pier.
Since 2004, Colon Pier has been dealing with corrosion which stopped boats from docking near the pier. Since then, it has been turned into a place for the community to fish and overlook the Cape Fear River.
Monday morning city leaders cleared the motion to recreate two wooden structures for the platforms, giving the pier a much-needed update and a fresher look.
“Our overall goal is to re-establish those observation platforms,” Deputy City Manager Richard King said. “We feel they’re very important for citizens and visitors who are walking down the riverfront. To be able to walk out on a pier type structure and be able to enjoy the river.”
City officials say it will be at least one year until the renovations are complete.
