Crowd welcomes teen back to school following July hit-and-run
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Southport teen who has been recovering from serious injuries in a hit-and-run from July was greeted by a large crowd outside his school today.
Jevanie Green has been in recovery and rehab for months since Southport Police said Joseph Smith, 23, hit the teen on West Moore Street in Southport. Since the incident, the community has come together to help Green and his family with medical expenses, holding fundraisers and showing support on a Facebook page started for Jervanie.
He was welcomed back to South Brunswick Middle School this morning with a crowd of students and teachers.
“I was more than excited I can’t explain how happy I was,” said Jevanie.
Jervanie even showed the crowd that his hard work in rehab is paying off — by walking in the front doors!
“The whole 6th grade was lined up outside when I walked in and they were all clapping,” said Jevanie.
Students and staff were right to applaud and cheer after all that Jevanie has endured. And Jevanie’s mother Eloise Mcfarland and the rest of his family have been right there by his side through his recovery.
“Wondering if he’s going to make it or not but I thank God he pulled through,” said McFarland. “Thank God that he is alive and still going strong, and I’m willing to go the extra mile with him, willing to give all my effort, my support, my everything.”
Jevanie and his family said they would like to thank the staff at New Hanover Regional Hospital, the Southport EMS and all the friends and family who have helped get Jevanie to this point. But there’s more to be done. With all the support Jevanie has received he is confident that he won’t just be to able walk on his own again but he’ll be able to run.
“I’m just really grateful that I am still alive,” said Jevanie.
Jevanie said he and his family have forgiven the person who hit him and they just want to focus on his recovery.
