Currie neighbors say flooded lake a big problem

CURRIE, NC (WWAY) — It’s a small lake, but it’s causing some big problems for neighbors in Pender County. They say their beautiful front lawn has turned into a swamp.

“You have dead fish in the yard,” homeowner Joyce Webber said. “It’s hard to get in and out to work, because then you got to wade through water.”

Webber says flooding off Pender Lake Road in Currie has been a problem for more than seven years.

“Every time that it rains a lot, the pond here overruns, and last year, it filled our yard, and we had fish swimming all up around the porch,” she said.

Another neighbor says the water sits under her home turning the house green.

“It’s real bad, and it’s a health, really, a bad health situation out here,” Shirley Lassiter said.

Flooding is not the only problem. A damaged home on the lake is also a worry. The house burned down several years ago, but those who live here fear the debris left behind could be dangerous.

“If it fell into the lake, then it could contaminate water, which feeds all of our wells,” Webber said.

Webber and her husband say they’ve reached out to Pender County with their concerns, but have not had any luck.

“They came out and looked at the house, and said the (damaged) house is still rebuildable, so they are not going to do anything with the house,” Robert Webber said. “With the flooding issues, they said it’s an act of nature, and there is nothing they can do about it.”

Pender County Planning and Community Development Director Kyle Breuer says the county is looking into the problem.
