Curtains Up: Cucalorus Film Festival lights up Cape Fear for its 29th year

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One of the most popular film festivals in the world kicked off in the Cape Fear for its 29th year.

The 29th annual Cucalorus Film Festival officially began on Wednesday night as people packed Thalian Hall for film screenings.

“A Song for Imogene” opened the festival on the main stage at Thalian.

Erika Arlee is the director and writer of the film. She is also one of the founders of Honey Head Films, a female-led production house in Wilmington.

“To be the opening night film at Cucalorus, which has always done such a wonderful job championing local films, really means a lot to us to bring it home to this community,” Arlee said. “A lot of people in this community made this film possible.”

“A Song for Imogene” is currently only playing at festivals, but Arlee says it will be available on streaming platforms in the near future.
