RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — NC State fired coach Dave Doeren on Saturday, October 24, ending a 14-season tenure in which he set the program’s career wins.

The school announced the decision less than a day after the Wolfpack fell to 3-4 by losing on the road to a Stanford team picked to finish last in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Doeren had a 98-74 record with the Wolfpack, becoming the program’s winningest coach with a 2023 victory over Miami.

He entered this year as the fourth-longest-tenured coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision and second in the ACC behind Clemson’s Dabo Swinney.

Running backs coach and special team’s coordinator Todd Goebbel will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Hired from Northern Illinois after the 2012 season, Doeren had occasionally been linked to other jobs, including talks with Tennessee in late 2017, but remained committed to the Wolfpack.

Doeren was under contract through December 2029.

The school will owe him $9.75 million in base salary for the remaining years plus any remaining payments for the 2026 calendar year, which would push that figure past the $10 million mark.

Additionally, the school announced Sunday that defensive coordinator, DJ Eliot was relieved from his duties.

The university said that Charlton Warren will handle the defensive play calling for the remainder of the season, and Zac Roper will coach the running backs and coordinate special teams.
