Day One: Time Warner Cable Girl’s High School Basketball Classic
Day one of the Time Warner Cable Girl’s High School Basketball Classic is over. Each first round game pitted a Wilmington team versus an out-of-town squad.
The Wildcats and the Wolverines both came out of the gate a little sluggish. One team responded though, the other did not not. New Hanover made a game of it for a while, but the opening game did not prove to a good one for New Hanover. The final score was Westover 60, New Hanover 35.
The victory moves Westover into the second round of the holiday tournament.
Game two featured Laney High School and East Wake. Laney trailed 18 to 11 at halftime. The Buccaneers made a nice comeback to tie the game at 20 in the third quarter. In fact, freshman Adrian Donierre had a hand in the comeback, but East Wake won 46-34 as the Buccaneers slide into the consolation bracket for Tuesday’s competition.
Game three matched Ashley High School against Havelock. Ashley held the lead the entire first half. At one point, the Screaming Eagles held a ten point lead. Havelock came back to force overtime and the visitors took the first round game, primarily due to 28 Ashley turnovers. The final score was Havelock 63, Ashley 60.
Next up was Ray Beatty’s Hoggard Vikings. Hoggard’s first round opponent was Middle Creek, arguably the best team in the tournament. Hoggard hung with Middle Creek for the most, but they had to play from behind the entire game. The Mustangs won the game, 60-56 over Hoggard.
