Deep Point Marina welcomes Bald Head travelers
Deep Point Marina is now open to the public. Dozens gathered to celebrate the grand opening for the ferry’s new 40,000 square foot, two level terminal.
"We’ve really upgraded the whole facility in relation to the transportation experience, parking baggage handling,” said Mark Mitchell, the executive vice-president of Bald Head Island Limited.
The terminal has an airport feel with curbside service, and sections for arrivals and departures. It also comes complete with a snack bar an 82-slip marina. It’s eight times larger than the old Indigo Plantation terminal. The new terminal took about 18 months to build. For years prior, those planning behind the scenes knew a bigger and better facility was needed.
"Our passenger volumes are growing, houses are getting built up on the island, we’ve got to get Deep Point out put in so that’s it’s ready for our projected future,” said Director of Planning and Construction Jim Henry.
More than 300,000 people embark on the ferry each year. Many who head out to Bald Head Island just for a visit, to work, or to live have already noticed some positive changes. Deep Point Marina will also house the island’s administrative offices, marine maintenance facility, and a shipping and receiving center.
