Dental clinic helps needy

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Local dentists are volunteering their time to help the less fortunate walk away with a sparkling smile. Missions of Mercy is a mobile dental clinic organized by the North Carolina Dental Society.

From cleanings to X-rays to fillings, the two-day clinic provides a variety of services. More than 300 volunteers including 55 dentists helped out today.

“They’re doing it for free, volunteering their time on their day off,” UNCW pre-dental student Allie Becker said. “Most dentists don’t work on Friday and Saturday as well, so it’s really nice of everyone to come out, and we have so many volunteers obviously.”

The event will continue bright and early tomorrow at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church on South College Road in Wilmington. To qualify, patients must be below two hundred percent of the federal poverty line.
