Deputies ID driver killed in crash, fall from bridge


NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Two investigations are underway after a man died following a crash on the I-140 Dan Cameron Bridge in New Hanover County Wednesday night.

According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer, 57-year-old Joseph Scott Mullins died.

Lt. Brewer tells WWAY that drivers reported someone driving erratically along I-140 around 7:45 p.m.

A witness saw Mullins’ vehicle hit an 18-wheeler semi-truck on the bridge.

The sheriff’s office says Mullins’ body was found in the marsh under the bridge. They’re not sure if he jumped or fell from the bridge.

NHSO is leading the death investigation and the Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation.
