Deputies investigating break-in at animal shelter
WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Deputies with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a break-in and burglary at the animal shelter.

According to the incident report, the break-in was reported around 7:39 a.m. Joey Prince, the director of the shelter, said they aren’t sure if the break-in happened last night or early this morning at the shelter located on Shelter Drive in Whiteville. Prince said a laptop, monitor and cash were taken. The suspect also caused damage breaking in. Prince said the damage is about $1,000, and the computer that was taken is their main computer they use.
Prince said someone who is familiar with their operations could have been involved, because the suspect knew of the location of the cash bag.
