Deputy cleared after altercation with student that went viral
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has finished its investigation of a physical altercation between a school resource officer and a female student that was photographed and went viral on social media.
Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer says the District Attorney’s Office reviewed the Sheriff’s Office’s investigation. He says Internal Affairs also investigated. He says all three reviews of the situation found Cpl. Shawn Newton followed his training and did nothing wrong. Brewer says Newton will not face criminal charges or any discipline from the sheriff.
Brewer says Friday morning a female student at Ashley High School got into a fight with another student that had to be broken up by a staff member. He says the student assaulted that staff member, as well as Cpl. Newton when he arrived to take control of the situation. Brewer says Newton put the girl up against the window of an office after she hit him, screamed profanities and refused to follow directions.
Newton has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2000.
