Despite big turnout, New Hanover Commission delays SUP hearing
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A huge crowd filled the New Hanover County Commission Chambers in downtown Wilmington this afternoon, but commissioners decided to cancel the reason most of the people were there.
The special use permit was adopted in 2011 to help monitor what kind of industry comes to our area. Commissioners voted four to one to remove the public hearing, because the planning board has a workshop tomorrow where they will be working on the final proposed amendments to the permit.
Beth Dawson was the only commissioner who opposed and said they needed to move forward with it.
Most of the people who showed up said they are concerned about the future of this permit. Kayne Darrell said she is even more frustrated that they were not heard tonight.
“It’s very frustrating,” Darrell said. “It’s very frustrating again, because we thought this was done and over with in 2011 and those special interests have continued to try to first get rid of the special use permit and now to weaken it and our planning board has been working on this and working on this and it’s time to bring this before the board.”
Members of the commission cited a Planning Board work session tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the New Hanover County Government Center to talk about the SUP more.
WWAY’s Hannah Patrick is at the meeting. She will have an update on WWAY NEWS at 5 p.m.
