FIRST ON 3: Bridge on Causeway near completion, opening date set

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Drivers who use the Causeway in Brunswick County might have noticed another part of the project looks to be complete, but a NCDOT spokesman said it will not open any time soon.

NCDOT crews are working to widen the Causeway between Leland and Wilmington. So far, one of four sections has been widened and opened to traffic. Work on the bridges on the Brunswick River continue, but new bridges over that river have also opened to traffic.

According to a NCDOT spokesman, the new bridge over Alligator Creek on the eastbound lanes is nearing completion and should be done by the end of June. This bridge will widen that part of the highway, with the help of an adjacent bridge that was completed in the past several months. The spokesman said, however, that section over Alligator Creek will not open until some time in September.

The spokesman said the crews are planning to open that bridge when the structure over the Brunswick River is complete. The entire project is scheduled for completion in November.
