WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — “They’re not scared to prepare,” New Hanover baseball coach Richard Foy told WWAY. “We’re going to pitch and play a little defense and try to hang around and get a big hit. It’s pretty simple.” That strategy appears to be working like clockwork. New Hanover is 15-0. This includes a 4-1 victory Monday afternoon over Ronald Reagan High School in the first round of the 3-day Ashley Spring Break Tournament. “We just keep doing what we’re doing,” Foy said. “We’re just trying to go 1-0 today. They’ve heard that so much that I’m afraid they don’t have any choice to believe it. They’re also realistic about the way high school teams are ranked. It’s pretty arbitrary.”

Arbitrary or not, number one in the state (according to Maxpreps) and number five in the country is worth noting. “We try to block that out,” sophomore Jac Croom said. “We like to come out here and play hard every game and not let it get to your head and try to not get cocky.”

New Hanover is off to a 7-0 start in the Mideastern Conference. They are 15-0 overall, and this includes a 3-2 come from behind, walk-off victory over perennial 1-A power Whiteville with Alec Cortner driving in the game winner.

“That one came down to the wire,” sophomore Blake Walston told WWAY when asked about the win over the Wolfpack. “Yes it’s always nice to win over Whiteville, but their ace Mackenzi didn’t pitch against us.” A win is a win and when you’re as young as this team is, you take all you can get. “We probably have five or six tenth graders in the starting lineup. We only have two seniors on the roster,” Foy said. “They’re both pitchers. We have a little bit more depth than we’re used to. It’s been a fun team.”
