Director of NC Museum of Natural Sciences retiring

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The woman who led the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences as it became the state’s most visited museum is retiring at the end of the year.

Betsy Bennett said Friday that she’s stepping down after more than two decades as director of the museum in downtown Raleigh. Under her leadership, the museum expanded from cramped quarters to an institution that attracts an average of 700,000 visitors a year.

Most recently, she supervised the museum’s new $56 million Nature Research Center, which opened in April. In its first two months, the center attracted 300,000 visitors, putting the museum on track attract 1 million visitors this year.

The 68-year-old Bennett says her work is close to complete with the center’s opening.
