Dispute over summer rental cleaning charges

Planning on renting a house at the beach this summer? Make sure you pay close attention to the cleaning contract.

The chief deputy legal counsel for the North Carolina Real Estate Commission says it’s important the leaser and lessee agree on what clean means.

When a cleaning service is not included in the contract, she says disputes over cleaning fees are common.

Jim Rozanski and his wife recently rented a house from Margaret Rudd and Associates in Oak Island.

Rozanski felt he was unfairly charged an $80 cleaning fee.

“I left it as I have left almost every unit I’ve rented up and down the Carolina coast in years past. And I did that without any equipment they provided,” said Rozanski.

The property manager at Margaret Rudd said the charges were warranted.
