Divided New Hanover Co. school board OKs magnet changes

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline) — In a divided vote, the New Hanover County Board of Education passed proposed changes to the district’s magnet schools, including moving the Spanish Immersion Program from Forest Hills Elementary to Gregory School of Science, Math and Technology and expanding it to a K-8 model next school year.

As part of the proposal, the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) magnet focus currently at Gregory will be phased out.

Before the final vote, board member Lisa Estep made a substitute motion to approve magnet changes at Freeman School of Engineering, Snipes Academy of the Arts and Design, and Virgo Preparatory Academy but hold off for one year on transitioning immersion to Gregory.
