Doctors still assessing extent of Michigan woman’s injuries after attack

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 22-year-old woman who recently moved to Wilmington remains hospitalized with severe injuries after what her family describes as a violent home invasion attack last week.

According to family members, Savannah Johnson, who moved to Wilmington from Michigan less than three weeks before the attack, suffered multiple fractures and other serious injuries.

Court records show Johnson sustained fractures to her C5 and C6 vertebrae in her neck, as well as compression fractures to the T2 through T6 vertebrae in her upper back. Records also indicate she suffered a vertebral artery dissection and narrowing of the internal carotid artery in her neck as a result of strangulation.

Johnson’s mother, Amanda Johnson, said she has struggled to comprehend the severity of the attack.

“She was such a beautiful, kind soul, and someone hurt her like this, it’s so cruel. It’s so terrible,” Amanda Johnson said. “My daughter was such a sweet girl, she’s so innocent.”

Johnson’s father, Ricky Johnson, said his daughter remains unable to breathe on her own as doctors continue working to address her condition.

He said physicians are still unable to determine the full extent of her injuries because of ongoing swelling.

The attack remains under investigation. Additional details about the circumstances surrounding the home invasion and any potential suspects have not been released.

Two fundraisers to support Savannah’s recovery have already raised over $33,000 combined.
