DOT plans to ease traffic at Belville intersection

BELVILLE — Department of Transportation engineers have a plan to ease traffic at a busy Belville intersection.

Dozens of car accidents happen each year at the intersection of River Road at Main Street and Blackwell Streets.

Engineers are hoping to alleviate that problem. Right now engineers are meeting with the public to show off their plan to change traffic flow at the busy intersection.

The plan would stop commuters on Blackwell and Main Streets from making left turns onto River Road. Concrete barriers would be built to force drivers to make a right turn instead.

This cost would come out of taxpayers’ money, which if approved, would cost around $250,000.

NC DOT engineer Patrick Riddle said, “This location has a lot of traffic going through it, especially during morning rush hour. Getting citizens out here to comment on this project could only make it better in the future.”

Construction could start as early as August. Traffic engineers want the public’s opinion. The meeting at Belville Elementary last until seven Tuesday night.
