Downtown restaurant burglarized overnight

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating a downtown business break-in.

Police said Beer Barrio was broken into around 2:30 a.m., according to the report. The crime was reported after 10 a.m.

One of Beer Barrio’s owners Carol Jensen’s said she got a call from an employee Tuesday morning about the break-in.

“I got a call from the guy who opened the restaurant, and he said he couldn’t figure out what was going on, but everything was in disarray,” said Jensen.

She said there was close to $2,000 worth of damage and items stolen, including three cash boxes, electronics and alcohol.

“It was so disheartening, we are trying to have Christmas here, and it was so ‘wait what’, you know, we couldn’t believe it, so it was sad,” said Jensen.

Jensen said they are looking at this sad situation in a better light since surrounding downtown businesses have offered up their surveillance tapes from that morning. She said she appreciates the downtown business rallying behind her and Beer Barrio.

“It was a beautiful thing, it felt like a Christmas miracle, that they all kind of rallied around and gave us the support,” said Jensen.

As police investigate Jensen is asking people to support them by just going in and having a good time.

“We have some really nice loyal customers already, if you hear about it and you love Beer Barrio and our food come on in and get some tacos and some beer and help support us at a time like this,” said Jensen.

The business has set up a fundraising page to help cover some of the costs.
