Downtown Wilmington alleyways to get clean-up funding
WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — Downtown Wilmington’s alleyways have seen better days.
Broken pavement with historic cobblestones peeking through gives way to uneven surfaces. Overgrown weeds reach knee-high heights in places. Trash litters the walkways and wedges in the nooks and crannies.
Mayor Bill Saffo knows they can be unsightly.
“Some of these are absolutely filthy,” he said. “They just need to be repaired.”
Under the city’s new budget, which will go up for a second and final vote on Tuesday, funding would be set aside to do just that. Earlier this month, city council directed staff to move forward with a revised budget that raises taxes 1 1/2 cents for the 2018-19 fiscal year, rather than the previously discussed half-cent hike.
