Downtown bars packed as fans watch UNC win national championship

It was a Carolina blue kind of night Monday. Sports bars were packed with UNC fans Monday night as the Tar Heels battled Michigan State for the NCAA National Basketball Championship.

UNC fans were cheering on their team at Southpaw in downtown Wilmington. They said watching the Tar Heels advance through the tournament has been exciting.

“It’s been incredible. It’s been awesomely nerve-racking, but that’s my team,” said Joshua Dyson. “They’re doing good, they’re staying strong.”

UNC went on to an 89-72 win over the Spartans. It is the fifth national championship for the Tar Heels and second title for Coach Roy Williams, matching the mark of his mentor Dean Smith.
