Downtown post office honored for history

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Every year the Historic Wilmington Foundation honors a historic building for Preservation Month. This year the award goes to the US Post Office and Federal Building in Downtown Wilmington.

The building has been around since the Great Depression. The red bricks holding it together are from North Carolina, tobacco leaves are engraved in the columns and historic artwork decorates the inside.

Historic Wilmington Foundation director George Edwards presented the postmaster with an honorary plaque.

“I think this is great, because it’s the first federal building in the city/county area to receive a plaque,” Edwards said. “Being a representative of the (Works Progress Administration) period in American history, the 1930s, with the public art that’s inside, it’s particularly significant that this post office receive the plaque.”

The post office put a commemorative postmark on all outgoing mail today to celebrate the honor.
