Driver identified in deadly fuel truck crash

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol has identified the man who died in a fiery crash near Nakina on Wednesday night.

Trooper M. Gore says Albert Christopher Settlemeyer, 39, of Clarkton, was driving a Reliable Tank Line fuel truck on NC 905 when he ran off the road to the right, hit a ditch and a utility pole, overturned, and then died when the tanker caught on fire.

The crash happened around 9:20 p.m. near homes.

Several area fire departments and hazmat responded.

Gore says no other cars were involved and alcohol was not a factor.

As of 11:00 a.m. Thursday, the road was still closed.
