Driver injured, firefighter struck by lightning in Duplin crash

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a crash in Duplin County that had a dangerous twist for first responders.

According to Trooper Jon Gurganus, the crash happened around 7:30am Thursday, during a heavy rainstorm. A pickup truck was traveling on I-40 westbound near Wallace when the truck hydroplaned, ran off the road to the right and struck a tree.

The driver was extricated and taken to the hospital in Kenansville with serious injuries.

While crews were helping with the crash, a firefighter was struck by lightning.

According to Trooper Gurganus, the firefighter has holding on to a metal fence along the interstate when lightning hit it.

The firefighter was checked out at the scene and is said to be okay.

NCHP says investigation into the crash continues.
