Driving on flooded roads could soon cost you in Carolina Beach

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (StarNews) — Ignoring warnings to drive through flooded roads in Carolina Beach could soon result in a ticket, just like other traffic offenses.

Tuesday, Carolina Beach Town Council will consider an ordinance allowing police officers to fine drivers on flooded streets, an action town officials acknowledge is focused largely on the Canal Drive area bordering the sound in Carolina Beach.

“I don’t want to dither and simply admire the problem. I want something in place that can resolve it, particularly before our season kicks in, in May,” said Mayor Joe Benson.

The proposed ordinance is the product of the Canal Drive Flooding Advisory Committee, which has been meeting since April 2018 to discuss inundation in the area. Per the ordinance, officers will be able to fine drivers they see causing a visible wake behind their vehicle when driving on a flooded road.
