Easley is expected witness at NC elections hearing

RALEIGH — More details will be out this week about Mike Easley’s campaigns and flights he received from supporters while North Carolina’s governor.

The State Board of Elections planned to start Monday a public hearing investigating whether Easley’s campaign committee or the state Democratic Party broke campaign finance laws.

The board ultimately could issue fines, refer the case to prosecutors or determine no wrongdoing occurred.

Easley and nearly 30 others have been subpoenaed by the board, which is expected to look at more than the flights in the next few days.

Also ordered to appear is McQueen Campbell, a former North Carolina State University trustee who has acknowledged providing flights to Easley. Federal prosecutors also have sought information about Campbell related to a land deal involving Easley.
