Easley officially appoints Wright replacement

RALEIGH (AP) — The people previously represented by former state House member Thomas Wright officially have their replacement.

Gov. Mike Easley appointed Sandra Spaulding Hughes on Wednesday to serve out the remainder of Wright’s term in the 18th House District, which covers parts of New Hanover and Pender counties.

Wright was kicked out of the House last month for ethical misconduct related to mishandling loans and charitable and campaign contributions. A jury convicted him this week on crimes related to the misconduct. A judge sent him to prison.

Democratic leaders in Wright’s district nominated Hughes for the seat last week. Easley was required by law to appoint her.

Hughes is a former Wilmington city council member. She still must be sworn into office to serve in the General Assembly.
