East Columbus raising money for solar cells

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) — Two East Columbus Teachers of the Year are working to bring solar panels to the school.

NC Greenpower launched a pilot program this year and East Columbus is one of the three schools selected to participate.

The program aims at bringing clean, green, and renewable energy to North Carolina.

At East Columbus, teachers say solar energy would make a great addition to the school’s stem program which focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The program would also include cross subject curriculum centered around solar energy.

“There are solar farms popping up all across Columbus County and we want our students to be exposed to that and be prepared for that,” said Business Education Teacher LaTanya Pattillo. “So it’s important. Sustainability is important. It is a must for us to continue to bring those opportunities here.”

NC Greenpower will provide a matching grant for the cells, but East Columbus needs your help to raise funds for their half of the project.
