Ebony Magazine senior editor visits UNCW

WILMINGTON — In honor of Black History Month the senior editor of Ebony Magazine paid a visit to UNCW Wednesday.

Sylvester Monroe spoke to faculty and students about diversity on college campuses. He also talked about his experiences as a journalist, first working for Newsweek and now working for Ebony.

As an African-American who grew up in the Chicago projects, he says a successful work ethic begins at home.

Monroe said, “I had a drive to do well in school, and that I got from my mother. People always tell me that I did well in school. But I had two choices. Do well or die, because my mother would have killed me.”

Monroe co-wrote the cover story in this month’s issue of Ebony Magazine on newsstands now.

He will also be speaking again Wednesday night at Cameron Hall auditorium at 7 p.m. on the UNCW campus.

His speech is called Leadership and Multiculturalism in the 21st Century.
