Economist: Regional economic outlook positive

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The spring outlook looks good. We’re not talking weather. We’re talking money.

Area professionals and bankers mixed business with breakfast this morning during PNC’s Regional Economic Outlook.

This is the fourth year for the bi-annual study in the region, and 64 percent of North Carolina businesses say they’re optimistic. That’s up from last year.

“Metro Wilmington, the broader region, is improving,” PNC economist Mekael Teshome said. “Things are getting better, and the jobs outlook is going to improve in 2014 compared with 2013.”

Last fall just more than 55 percent of businesses had a positive outlook on the economy and felt optimistic. Teshome blamed tax increases, spending cuts and policy battles in Washington for that lower percentage.
