“Educational Alternatives for Suspended Youth” ends Tuesday

WILMINGTON — As of Tuesday New Hanover County students who get suspended may not have a place to go to keep up with their assignments.

A grant to the program “Educational Alternatives for Suspended Youth” ends Tuesday.
“Program EASY” has been in place since 2001 and has helped more than 1,700 troubled students keep up with their school work.

The program’s director says she has seen some students’ lives change after going to the classes.

Program EASY Director Nikki Bramlett-Reid said, “We’ve seen children that we’re told that they would not graduate from school graduate and receive their diplomas. We’ve seen children who were told they wouldn’t pass their grade make a turn around.”

Reid says since school starts in less than a month she is worried that suspended students won’t have a safe place to keep up with their assignments.
