Educators hope to see more funds following Powerball jackpot

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools received around $850,000 from lottery revenues in 2015.

According to NC Public Schools, 30 percent of lottery revenue goes toward education in the state. In Brunswick County, the majority of that money goes toward construction to expand schools. Currently, a new classroom wing is being added to North Brunswick High School, while a new gymnasium is being built at Waccamaw Middle School.

School spokesperson Jessica Swencki said the money is helpful, even though it was originally meant to supplement school budgets, not be part of it.

“When the economy took it’s downturn, it was really necessary for the lottery dollars to help enhance the state budget as a whole,” said Swencki.

The Powerball’s current run without a jackpot winner has already generated more than $14 million for education in North Carolina, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.
