Edwards staffers evacuate headquarters, suspicious package found

RALEIGH (AP) — Once again, workers at John Edwards' campaign headquarters in Chapel Hill have had to evacuate the building because of a suspicious package.

A beeping device inside a package sent to the Democratic presidential candidate forced the third evacuation this year.

Captain Bob Overton of the Chapel Hill Police Department says a bomb squad from nearby Durham County made the device safe, but authorities weren't immediately sure if the item posed a threat.

Edwards officials say the package arrived at campaign headquarters this morning.

Postal employees in Chapel Hill intercepted another suspicious package in May after finding it contained a powdery substance. Edwards staffers also evacuated their office in Chapel Hill in March after an employee opened a package that contained a powdery substance and what Edwards later deemed "negative comments."

Both packages tested negative for anthrax.
