Edwards to help rural South Carolina schools
DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is to release a plan to give teachers in poor, rural schools in South Carolina a raise of up to $15,000.
The former North Carolina senator is visiting what’s known as the “Corridor of Shame,” an area along Interstate 95 where economic development has lagged, affecting school quality.
Edwards’ plan being announced in Darlington would also make four-year-old kindergarten available to all children.
He is proposing a six-part plan to improve rural schools in South Carolina. Eight poor school districts have sued the state, challenging the way legislators fund public schools.
Edwards’ campaign says he’s previously released some of the proposals, but they are being packaged specifically for South Carolina, where he was born.
