Eight sites added to, one saved from Most Threatened Historic Places list

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Historic Wilmington Foundation released its list of the Most Threatened Historic Places in our area today.

Bricks, two-lane roads, buildings and much more are on the ninth edition of the list.

Historic Wilmington Foundation Executive Director George Edwards says awareness is key to preserving these places. Awareness may be what made the list larger, but it has also helped to save some of these places.

Wilmington investment broker John Hinnant sees the importance in preserving the city’s culture. His client bid on and won the Murchison Building on N. Front Street in downtown Wilmington.

“It’s significantly important, because the marketing and public relations associated with historic preservation is often most heard when we lose important structures,” Hinnant said.

This is one of the first places on the list this year that will be saved, but Edwards hopes that awareness will help bring an end to these annual announcements.
