ELECTION DAY: Polls open until 7:30 p.m. for municipal elections
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Polls are open in towns and cities across North Carolina.
While all the big election talk is about presidential candidates who are still months away from their first primary, voters in the Tar Heel State can cast votes today in elections that hit a lot closer to home.
Odd-numbered years mean municipal elections in North Carolina. Today there are 93 contests on ballots in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Pender counties.
Among the contested races are three opens seats on Wilmington City Council, a battle between the current and former mayors in Carolina Beach just two years after their race came down to a handful of votes and open mayoral seats in Southport and Oak Island.
Polls opened at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
Election results will be available on WWAYTV3.com after the polls close.
