Elections board threatens Wright with deadline

RALEIGH (AP) — The state Board of Elections is giving New Hanover County Representative Thomas Wright a deadline to turn in his late financial disclosure form.

Wright was told in a registered letter dated Aug. 14 that he had 20 days from the date he received the letter to turn in his report for the first six months of the year. That report was due July 27.

The letter from the board says if Wright doesn't comply, he faces having his re-election campaign shut down.

Wright's campaign was suspended in 2001 over late reports. His re-election was certified by the state after he submitted the report more than a year late.

A board investigator says Wright took in more than $472,000 in campaign donations between 2000 and 2006, but only spent $229,000 on his campaigns.

The eight-term legislator isn't charged with any crime. So far, no one from Wright's offices in Raleigh and Wilmington has returned phone calls seeking comment.
