Elizabethtown breaks ground on farmers market

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) — People in Elizabethtown are looking forward to their very own homegrown fruits and vegetables. Town officials broke ground today on an open-air farmer’s market scheduled to open next year.

Even the 110 degree heat index didn’t stop a crowd from seeing the big day firsthand. The Cape Fear Farmer’s Market will be located on the old Red and White grocery store property.

“When we get the market open we expect it will be a significant drawing card and a good economic recruiting tool for Elizabethtown and Bladen County,” Elizabethtown Manager Eddie Madden said.

Work on building the market starts in October and should be finished in February. Grant money will pay for the $1.7 million price tag.
