Emergency crews respond to home off Market Street; one confirmed dead

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Market Street is reduced to three lanes at 20th Street while the Wilmington Police and Fire Department investigate a hazardous materials incident.

New Hanover County Emergency Management says crews from the police, fire, and fire’s hazardous materials departments as well as EMS units responded to 2004 20th Street Sunday night.

Emergency management says there is one death involved with the situation but specifics are not known at this time.

A spokeswoman for Wilmington Police says officers were initially called to the home for a death investigation around 5:45 pm. Officers allegedly found a substance they could not identify when they arrived and called in HAZMAT teams.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area due to the amount of emergency vehicles and personnel on the scene. Stay with WWAY for more details as they become available.
